United States Light House Service
Cape Henlopen Lighthouse

Lewes, Delaware

circa 1914

Built in 1767 one mile inland on the south side entrance of Delaware Bay. Burnt nearly to the ground by the British, it was rebuilt in 1784. By 1924 erosion had caused the lighthouse to be abandoned. A severe storm in 1926 finally toppled the tower.
